We’ve all got that one friend who has a quote for every occasion. Break up ahoy? “Don’t cry because it’s over. Smile because it happened.” Drowning in coursework? “The bigger the storm, the brighter the rainbow.” Crisis of confidence? “Be your own kind of beautiful.”
So there’s nothing wrong with all this, exactly, but these kinda quotes can start to feel a bit, erm, meaningless once you’ve heard them trotted out a few (hundred) times.
Here are a few Instagram quotes that might really get you thinking…
Keep moving forward
If you’re a sucker for a bit of positive thinking, then this account needs your follow, ASAP. @positivelypresent is packed full of quotes that don’t only make you think – they’re also really pretty to look at. This gorgeous little number is a quote from civil rights activist, Martin Luther King, and they don’t come much more inspiring than him. MLK’s dream was an end to racism and while yours (to finish your geography essay, maybe?) might not be quite so lofty, all goals are important and have something in common: they’ll only be reached if you keep moving forward and don’t give up.
If you like deep and meaningfuls, you’ve got to check out Lebanese-American writer and poet, Kahlil Gibran. You could pick up his best-known work, The Prophet, which is packed with spiritual teachings, or you could just read some highlights on this Insta. So next time you don’t like what you see in the mirror, remember: it’s what’s inside that counts.
A little magic
When you think of the absolute boss of childhood stories, Roald Dahl, it’s not necessary inspo quotes that come to mind. Kooky characters, cheeky rhymes and slightly dark storylines, yes, but rules for how to get your best life are a way down the list. It’s surprising when you come across little gems like this that add some sparkle to your day. Don’t stop believing!
Hope you're all having a magical Monday! We love this quote from the legendary Roald Dahl – you can find more of these beautiful quotes in our Happy Notes booklet which comes with issue 11. Wander and wonder
Does it ever feel like everyone else has plans, goals and missions that they’re furiously working towards, while you’re just milling about? Then The Lord of the Rings author, J. R. R. Tolkein’s quote could speak to you. It’s a line from a riddle poem by Tolkein’s character, Bilbo Baggins, and refers to the idea that straying from the well-trodden path can make you a stronger person, even if outsiders think you don’t have a plan.
Queen of the world, J.K. Rowling, built her magical literary empire from nothing, so we’re all ears when it comes to taking her advice. She says that you can make anything happen, as long as you’re brave enough, so what are you waiting for?
Look up at the stars
The late professor Stephen Hawking knew a thing a two about, erm, everything, including how to create a kickass inspo moment. On the day he died, plenty of fans took to the ‘gram with this quote about the power of positive thinking: “Remember to look up at the stars and not down at your feet. Try to make sense of what you see and wonder about what makes the universe exist. Be curious. And however difficult life may seem, there is always something you can do and succeed at. It matters that you don’t just give up.”
Sad news this morning that Stephen Hawking has died. What a loss of such a fantastic intellectual. This is one of my favourite quotes of his. Tonight, I will be looking up at the stars Stephen. . . . #tattymoo #behindthescenes #smallbusiness #mamamaker #quoteoftheday #inspirationalquotes #stephenhawking #stars #stephenhawkingquotes
What’s not to love about words that encourage us to dive into nature and live a wild and free life? Nothing… but the idea of soaking up nature can seem a bit unrealistic if you live in the city, 100 miles from the beach, and it rains all the time anyway. Author Ralph Waldo Emerson writes about the inspiring wonder of nature, and urges us to embrace it whenever we can – even if that’s just by taking big lungfuls of fresh air. It’s guaranteed to make even the worse days feel a little bit better.
This is one of Paperfinch's bestsellers…and I gotta say, it's one of my favorites too. The quote is *so* defining for me – Life in the Sunshine, Swim the Sea, Drink the Wild Air. That's exactly the kind of life I want for my son – and why we up and moved to St Petersburg, Florida last year. I want my son to experience life outdoors. Exploring the world and *really* living life. Do you have a life quote? Or one that is almost like a mantra to you? I LOVE quotes – share below and you might just see it in a future #paperfinchdesign print! Or mug.
